It’s been hot in Auckland. That plays it down quite a bit but the city has been muggy and humid and my hair as not been handling this well.
Get it together Auckland.
So I got up on Saturday and decided that wings were the order of the day. Who doesn’t love some crispy chicken wings to kick back and enjoy with a cold glass of wine? Rhetorical question there guys, the answer is everyone. These wings are salty and sweet and sticky but not too sticky and they’re perfect served with a creamy lime dip and lashings of spicy Siracha sauce. These wings are all I thought about all day and I’m sure I had a dream about them that Saturday night. I made them inside because the sky had opened up but next weekend, these wings are going on the BBQ.

Oh gosh is it cold here in Auckland. I know the rest of the country laughs when we say that but it has definitely started to get chilly. Luckily today is the winter solstice and so the days will start to get longer rather than shorter now. I am so looking forward to a bit of warmer weather. I’m one of those annoying people who like the weather to be just right, not too hot or cold.
The one good thing about the cooler weather is that I don’t mind standing in the kitchen with the oven on while I make a roast. Of course this makes my parents and boyfriend happy too. This Sunday I found myself making two roasts but I’ll post about them separately. The first roast I made was a honey mustard chicken roast and man was it good.
I’m always cautious not to make a roast too sweet because it can be a bit over powering.
Luckily this recipe isn’t over powering and you can still taste the chicken. It also goes really well in a sandwich the next day with some mayo and lettuce. Yum!

This chicken and vegetable noodle soup can also be called “soup for bad and sad days because no one wants steak when they’re upset”.
The last month has been incredibly sad and stressful. Not just for myself but for a lot of my friends and family. It’s times like these that I miss the days of worrying about simpler things like if I would get home before the rains hits to retrieve the washing or how many times I can get away with eating pizza before the scales sneak up a few grams. As we grow, times get harder, we’re exposed to more and we’re expected to handle a lot of really intense situations. Sometimes it makes us stronger, sometimes we break down and have to rebuild ourselves from scratch.
I made this chicken and vegetable noodle soup from scratch because I needed to feel the accomplishment that comes with making something for yourself. Making soup can be cathartic, it’s slow and deliberate work resulting in something tasty and appreciated. It makes rebuilding yourself easier to manage.
